Therapeutic Approaches

.

Treatment encompasses a range of techniques tailored specifically to address your individual needs and concerns.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT is an evidence-based psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals change their relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences rather than becoming caught in attempts to control or eliminate them. Through the three core processes of ACT—opening up to difficult internal experiences, being present with greater awareness, and taking action guided by personal values—clients learn to develop psychological flexibility and respond to life’s challenges with greater choice and intention. ACT supports individuals in clarifying their values and building the skills needed to live in alignment with those values while navigating life’s inevitable challenges. It is used to address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, stress and addiction.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally bringing awareness to the present moment with openness and curiosity. It involves noticing thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and external experiences without automatically judging, avoiding, or becoming overwhelmed by them. Through mindfulness practices such as grounding exercises, focused attention, and present-moment awareness, individuals can develop greater clarity, emotional awareness, and the ability to respond to experiences with more choice. Regular mindfulness practice can support stress management, emotional regulation, and psychological flexibility in navigating life’s challenges.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach focused on identifying and changing negative or unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to psychological distress. It emphasizes the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, helping individuals understand how these patterns can influence the way they experience and respond to challenging situations. CBT aims to teach practical, evidence-based skills to manage emotions, develop more balanced ways of thinking, change unhelpful behaviours, overcome challenges, and work toward meaningful personal goals. It is an evidence-based approach that is widely used to treat a variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Exposure and Response prevention

ERP is an evidence-based therapy that is particularly effective for OCD and anxiety-related concerns. ERP involves gradually and intentionally facing situations, thoughts, images, or sensations that trigger anxiety or discomfort, while learning to resist compulsions, reassurance-seeking and avoidant behaviours used to reduce that discomfort. Through repeated practice, you can learn that anxiety and uncertainty are manageable and that you do not need to rely on compulsions or avoidance to feel safe. Over time, ERP can help reduce the impact of anxiety and OCD on your daily life and increase your sense of freedom and confidence.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

DBT is an evidence-based psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals develop skills to manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and respond more effectively to life’s challenges. DBT integrates acceptance and change by validating a person’s experiences while building practical strategies for creating meaningful change. Through skills training in areas such as mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, DBT helps individuals increase self-awareness, strengthen coping strategies, and develop greater flexibility in navigating difficult emotions and situations.

Trauma-informed Therapy

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach to psychotherapy that emphasizes understanding the impact of trauma on an individual’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. It recognizes that experiences of trauma can have profound and lasting effects on a person’s life, relationships and sense of self. Trauma-informed therapy prioritizes safety, trust and empowerment, to work collaboratively with clients to address trauma-related symptoms and promote healing and recovery. This approach integrates knowledge about the prevalence and effects of trauma into all aspects of therapy, including assessment, treatment planning and intervention. Trauma-informed therapy aims to create a supportive and validating environment where clients feel understood and empowered to explore their experiences and work towards healing and growth..
